Amy Northcutt is a former history teacher at Turlock Christian School in Turlock, California.

At the age 26, Amy Northcutt, along with her husband Justin Northcutt, were arrested for sending erotic text messages to a 16-year-old female student and attempting to arrange group sex with her.

Rita Brum Pedo PE Teacher

A love letter discovered by a mother has led to the arrest of a San Jose physical education teacher who is accused of having an illicit sexual relationship with a student, according to police reports.

Rita Brum, 24, a first-year teacher at Mount Pleasant High School in East San Jose, is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on charges of having sexual relations with a minor — a 17-year-old female student, authorities said.

It marks the second time in a week that a female physical education teacher who has worked at a South Bay school was accused of having an illegal sexual relationship with a girl.

Last week, Abigail Holloway was arrested in Colorado on suspicion of having a three-year sexual relationship with a student at Kings Academy, a Christian preparatory school in Sunnyvale. The girl was 13 when the purported illicit relationship started.

Brum was arrested Feb. 26 and has been released on $15,000 bail. Her attorney Edward N. Ajlouny said Brum plans to take “full responsibility” for the relationship. Ajlouny said he hopes to get the “best plea deal possible” for his client.

“Rita is a very good person who made a mistake,” Ajlouny said. “She had some issues in her past that may have led her to make this choice. We’re only hoping that we can avoid significant jail time. She’s taken responsibility and she is trying to improve herself and get clarity so this won’t happen again.”

Bob Nuñez, superintendent for the East Side Union High School District, said Brum was placed on administrative leave following her arrest. Tuesday night, the school board voted to fire Brum.

“I believe that the district took every precaution, as we normally do,” Nuñez said. “At this point, we’re trying to move ahead and deal with any issues brought to us by parents and or students.”

According to police reports, Brum met the 17-year-old girl, a student at Mount Pleasant High, early in the school year.

In the following months, their relationship grew as they spent time together on and off campus.

It wasn’t until Brum invited the girl to her house to watch a Sharks hockey game in early December that they began kissing. The girl told police it was a “long passionate kiss” and she was “freaked out” after, because it was a teacher.

The girl told police she and Brum kissed on campus a couple of times and eventually began a sexual relationship.

The relationship ended when the girl’s mother found a love letter from Brum to her daughter. The mom became angry and confronted her daughter, who then detailed her relationship with Brum.

The mother then confronted Brum at HP Pavilion and pulled her hair during an altercation, according to a police report. Officers at the arena responded to the incident and were told about the illicit relationship.

Another PE teacher at Mount Pleasant interviewed by police told investigators that Brum was an intern in the process of earning her teaching credentials at San Jose State University. She described Brum to police as “supportive and encouraging” and said Brum was also an assistant soccer coach who was “very well liked.”

Megan Sainsbury Pedo PE Teacher

A South Bay physical education teacher was arrested on suspicion of having an inappropriate relationship with a student — the third in two weeks.

Megan Sainsbury, 31, a teacher and former coach at Prospect High School in Saratoga, was arrested Wednesday on three misdemeanor counts of “annoying or molesting” a 17-year-old student, according to court documents.

The misconduct alleged in the documents occurred from October 2007 to January 2009. According to court records, Sainsbury and the student kissed and touched, but there is no evidence they had sex. They allegedly exchanged text messages of a romantic nature. Sainsbury bought the teen gifts, including a cell phone, to entice the girl to continue their relationship, a Santa Clara County sheriff’s report contended.

Sainsbury is out on bail and scheduled to appear in court April 27 to be formally arraigned.

Sainsbury did not return a phone call from the Mercury News.

She is the third female physical education teacher arrested in the past two weeks on suspicion of having an inappropriate relationship with female students. The other two teachers were arrested on felony charges because they are accused of having had sexual relationships with their female students.

“You probably noticed that several teachers have been arrested on these types of charges lately,” said Santa Clara County Supervising Deputy District Attorney Mike Fletcher, head of the sexual assault

team. “But teachers are no more likely than doctors, lawyers or newspaper reporters to commit these crimes. Sex crimes affect a wide cross-section of demographics. I think it’s just a fluke.”

That said, Fletcher added that he believes the use of technology, such as texting in particular, can intensify a relationship between a coach and student.

Prospect High School principal Diane Burbank said Sainsbury was placed “on leave” and referred all other questions to Campbell Union High School District Assistant Superintendent Ray Cutten, who was not immediately available for comment.

According to a sheriff’s report, Sainsbury stepped down as coach of the girls basketball team in October in order to pursue her studies and get a teaching credential.

Sainsbury is a Prospect alumna. She was a star basketball player at the school and went on to play field hockey at University of California-Berkeley.

While Sainsbury’s case is a misdemeanor, the two other South Bay teachers charged recently face felony counts. Felonies are typically based on whether the victims are younger than 14, whether the suspect is 10 years older than the victim and the physical nature of the crime.

Holloway is fighting being extradited to Santa Clara County, where prosecutors want to charge her with 15 counts of lewd acts on a child. That case began to surface in October, when the former student, now a college student, went to her counselor to discuss her confusion and trust issues stemming from the suspected three-year sexual relationship with Holloway that authorities say started when she was 13.
